Marketing of consulting and contracting services rambling thoughts
- Market services so as to create a demand not to provide (sale) an immediate service.
- Solution to address what is the motivation (pain) that is driving client’s need for consulting
- Differentiate service to be provided
- Define a unique service(s) and focus on these services, but be flexible.
- Incorporate zeitgeist concepts but get out in front of trend
- Contractor: definition: provides replacement skill — lower rate, but more available work; tends to be a community role
- Consultant: definition: applies intellectual property — higher rate, less work but usually more challenging – see: http://www.wipo.int/about-ip/en/ See: IP definition from Wikipedia: “Intellectual property rights are a bundle of exclusive rights over creations of the mind, both artistic and commercial”
- Consultant should aim to bill %65 of the workable year; rule of thumb: take annual salary that is goal for that year and divide by 2000 hours to come up with rate.
